BLOUGROND COLLECTION

‘Blougrond’ is a text-less illustrated narrative about pottery shards, the characters that escape from them, and an adventurous journey.  The story was inspired by a collection of British pottery shards that were found years ago in the garden of my childhood-home in Paarl.

It was the cut-off fragments of blue and white printed patterns and Victorian figures on the shards that captured my imagination – it seemed that in each shard a whole world could be discovered. These fragments became the starting point for my story about a journey to fantasy worlds, working together, finding oneself, and transformation. In the story, the characters escape from their shards and together take on a life-changing journey with an Asiatic Pheasant as their guide.

As each page turns the characters find themselves slightly changed as they enter new unknown worlds. Without relying on words for direction, the reader explores a unique story every time, prompted by his/her imagination.
